CALL FOR ARTISTS & CURATORS

The philosophers have interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.   ― Karl Marx, Eleven Theses on Feuerbach

Springboard Performance invites artists to create short online performance works that (just might) change the way we think.

The current global pandemic has brought the world to a halt. Our minds race between stillness and action, speed and silence. Systems are laid bare. Our society - the systems that hold us together - is now in question. There is no ‘new normal’. There is a rupture that offers a portal. A cracked open door into a post-pandemic freedom that breaks with the past. In the midst of this terrible despair and flux we are offered the chance to rethink the world anew. And who better to do this than artists, our physical and live performance philosophers who train in process and the possibility of ‘what if’?

COVID has changed how we work. But art can change how we think. Standing in the shards of the past and wading through the post-pandemic possibility, Springboard Performance asks you to change the world - in 5 minutes - in a digital cabaret format. Joke, jest, interrogate, demand, subvert, renew, reimagine. Define your form and express anew.

5 MINUTES TO CHANGE THE WORLD invites artists to investigate what matters now. Time. Space. Perspective. You. Us. The Body. Your Body. Systems. Possibilities. Philosophies. Live performance. The digital frontier. Borders and exchange. Internal and external worlds. The desire to fully occupy the present, in all its complexity.

We invite folks to invest in gestures of radical solidarity between artists, audiences, communities, to help us design what is ahead. From our current in-between state of experience, Springboard invites performances that suggest the new.

5 MINUTES TO CHANGE THE WORLD will support the development and presentation of ten artists and/or companies based anywhere in the world, with a priority on representing artists local to Calgary and placing them in conversation with other provincial, national, and international artists and works. The program will also engage one local emerging curator.
