Split | Student Reflections: Mackenzie Thompson
Split represents a contrast between the female human body’s elegance and strength. These factors make for a powerful and invigorating piece. I believe this piece is portraying a female struggling to find unison amongst life’s adversity. The two dancers ultimately represent two contrasting personalities of the same individual. These personalities made for a beautiful variation of peaceful harmony and dysfunctional aggression between characters. In this way, the performance directly relates to that of an individual’s real-world emotional experience, touching every individual in the audience in a unique way. The intricacy and synchronization of this piece is like no other. Social norms are broken, and complete vulnerability is shown in the most influential way. The strength of a woman is displayed through the muscular figure allowing the audience to reflect upon female dominance. The powerful character eventually took over the elegant female, which was displaying what I believe to be sanity; ultimately making herself go insane. Enabling the negativity of one’s mind to take over a female’s true self is what truly creates destruction. The tension builds throughout as the performance stage gets smaller. The smaller the stage becomes, the more of a “monster” the apparently dominant female becomes, ultimately destroying the other female; herself. I believe the consistency of the soundtrack represents the constant demands that life holds, while the white boxes represent increased irritation with one’s self. The smaller the boxes became, it seemed the more irritated the characters become with one another. The music remained constant since life’s demands never changed, which is the causation for the tension. Split is a fantastic real-world piece demonstrating the development and movement of the female body and will make you wonder why society places such high expectations on females, both mentally and physically.
