About the Performances & the Artists
Harp & Plant Music by Eily Aurora
HARP & PLANT MUSIC // You'll get to see how the innovative Music of the Plants machine translates electromagnetic variations of a living house plant into electronic sound. Then I'll improvise with some of my house plants for you! The plants in our homes can be a great source of comfort, and these 30 minute performances will help you appreciate them even more. Connecting to nature has significant mental health benefits, and is even more important during these challenging times of COVID-19.
EILY AURORA // Eily is a singer/songwriter, harpist and facilitator in Calgary, Canada. Performing across stages in North America for over a decade, her second CD, A Journey of the Heart, was released in 2018. With a passion to support mental health, she founded the Home Shall Be Here project in 2019, which toured concerts and music workshops to 14 communities across western Canada. Eily is currently designing creative and participatory methods for mental wellness as a member of Alberta Social Innovation Connect's Community Catalyst Program.
Wastelands by Savanna Harvey and Lindsey Zess
Savanna Harvey and Lindsey Zess bring you excerpts from Wastelands - an apocalyptic comedy about garbage that blurs the lines between art and trash. This TED Talk style performance explores how material objects, non-human entities, and physical environments become storytellers in their own right, interwoven with an imagined tale of the final moments of the last person on earth.
This theatrical duo feels a deep sense of responsibility to shape their artistic practice in response to immediate global concerns of climate and resource management. In Wastelands, Lindsey and Savanna apply a lens of material analysis to their theatre making, both in performance and design, creating animated objects and living landscapes out of garbage. Stylistically distinct from traditional puppetry, the meaning and history of the material itself is privileged over the artfulness of performance. The puppet sculptures are human-like effigies that examine plastics' life cycle -- from use to refuse to re-use -- contrasted with the life of a human being.
SAVANNA HARVEY // Savanna is a gun-for-hire producer of the broke and beautiful. She is an organizer of secret midnight meetings, an instigator of resistance, and a recruiter of citizens. Her cause is art without permission. As a creator-performer, she has toured Canada with her weird little shows about garbage puppets and science ghosts. She is a loner and co-conspirator. She is a killjoy feminist, a recreational mad scientist, and a ruthless proponent of kindness.
She has been nominated for the City of Calgary RBC Emerging Artist Award, the Vancouver Fringe Artistic Risk Award, and the Calgary Fringe Emerging Artist Award. She is a recipient of the University of Alberta New Works Festival Playwright Award. Savanna has hustled for numerous arts organizations/festivals across Alberta and countless scrappy indie artists around the globe.
LINDSEY ZESS // Lindsey is a Calgary-based director, designer, maker and arts educator specializing in devised performance, physical theatre and animated objects. Holding an MFA in directing from the University of Calgary, Lindsey has spent the past decade creating new works that examine the shifting dynamics of Canada’s social and physical landscape. Theatrical fascinations include ecoscenography, cross-cultural storytelling, social engagement, and activist performance. Returning as a graduate student and research assistant in theatre design at the University of Calgary, her creation and research places a strong emphasis on the material, mythological and metaphysical.
Live Music by DJ Henry
DJ Henry // DJ Henry is no stranger to the containR stage, having been the host of the wildly successful annual event “Latin Music Nights” and “Salsa Wednesdays” in the summer at containR. Dedication and diversity are what set apart DJ HENRY from others. With music being a part of his life ever since he was born, he finally decided to take on DJing in 2008. Now, you can catch DJ Henry rocking various events in YYC - including the Zero Waste Market!
