PROJECT 686km - Creative Exchange
October 12 - 18
PROJECT 686km Artistic Exchange considers the distance between the creative centres of Calgary and Vancouver and offers a roadmap for creative exchange for emerging artists of colour who are living and creating in each centre. The residency offers artist driven discussions, creation, and work-in-progress showings. 2020 Vancouver and Calgary residency artists include Eric Cheung, Kristy Janvier, Jessica McMann, Sabrina “Naz” Comănescu, Jason Owin F. Galeos, and Zahra Shahab.
PROJECT 686km is developed by Springboard Performance, the Fluid Festival, and Made in BC - Dance on Tour, with additional funding and administrative support from the CanDance Network, the Dance Section of The Canada Council for the Arts, and Canadian Heritage.
This event is in partnership with Configurations in Motion: Performance Curation and Communities of Colour, 4th iteration.
We would love to thank our creative partners: SLIPPAGE: PERFORMANCE | CULTURE | TECHNOLOGY@Duke University, and SFU Woodwards Cultural Programming, as well as facility support from partners Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, 45 W Studio, and VBC Studio.

I am black: [you have to be willing to not know] by Thomas F. DeFrantz
Contemporary black performance is saturated with experience and complexities that evade easy affiliations or knowings. In his dialogic manifesto-lecture-performance, “I Am Black: (you have to be willing to not know),” Thomas F. DeFrantz offers strategies for acknowledging how artists of color and their collaborating audiences of color operate in several keys simultaneously but are inevitably compelled to reduce their work and experience to the unknowable, shameful category of “race.”
Including reflections with artists Michele Moss and Justine Chambers
