Meghann Michalsky
Ms. Michalsky completed her BA in Contemporary Dance, with a concentration in Choreography and Performance, at the University of Calgary. Since graduating she has rigorously pursued her dance technique training in Canada as well as in Israel, Portugal, Sweden, the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria. She is the co-creator of Project InTandem and YYC Contemporary Technique Training, two programs that offer opportunities to emerging artists. She was awarded the 2019 RBC Emerging Artist Award at the Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions - she is the first Dancer/Choreographer to receive this award.
Michalsky has worked with an array of artists, including Dancers’ Studio West, Davida Monk, Linnea Swan, Cloudsway Dance Theatre, kloetzel&co, & Peggy Baker Dance Projects, amongst others. Her most recent choreographic works have been presented at Project InTandem, Fluid Festival, Stream of Dance Festival, Annual Alberta Dance Festival, Convergence, and abroad in Finland. Her supplementary knowledge in Hip-Hop and Krump movement principles has influenced her to highlight isolated, rhythmic, bound, and fast-twitch movement qualities into her choreographies.
She is interested in the effects of control, constraint, illusion, and perception of a society that is deemed to be free. Her research starts with her trust in the body and investigating how bodily experiences are deeply embedded. She sees her work as Feminist Physicality, as she approaches her research from a physical rather than narrative or conceptual lens.
